Growing hair that is long, strong, and shiny might be your goal, but where does one start? Hair oils prove to be an essential part of any hair routine, by imparting necessary nutrients and nourishing both the scalp and the strand. Nowadays, store shelves are full of so many varieties of oil that promise to give you everything you’ve dreamed of, and more. But which oil is best? Which one will win and emerge supreme as the best oil for stimulating hair growth?
We’re pitting some of the most popular oils together: Coconut, Argan, Castor, Jojoba, and Almond, with our personal favourite, Rosemary. Now, it’s time to turn the heat up.
Coconut oil
Multipurpose and evergreen, coconut oil works wonderfully on the skin as a moisturiser and make-up remover, and as a childhood favourite for scalp massages. In studies, it has been shown to be best for reducing protein loss in hair and strengthening the follicle. It repairs damaged hair so that it grows back stronger and healthier. However, there’s not much known about how much it affects the rate at which your hair grows.
Rosemary oil, on the other hand, boosts hair growth by increasing circulation and cleans up the scalp with its antimicrobial properties, leaving it itch and dandruff free. It works just as effectively as minoxidil, a popular hair growth medication, with the added benefits of boosting scalp health.
Argan oil
Argan oil is a popular component in styling products, as it nourishes to tackle dryness and frizz, leaving the hair stronger and healthier. Again, there’s not a lot of research done on its effectiveness towards hair growth, but it’s still a great oil to use for bringing shine and control to your hair.
Castor oil
Castor oil once made waves on the internet for helping hair grow back thicker and faster, but it’s time to fact check that. Like rosemary, it is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, making it a worthwhile competitor for maintaining scalp health. It is rich in ricinoleic acid which is what people attribute their hair growth to, but to a large extent it has been anecdotal, with not a lot of scientific backing for this natural ingredient’s ability to make your hair grow faster.
Jojoba oil
Versatile and chemically unique, Jojoba oil mimics oil and sebum secreted by the skin which makes it easily absorbable by the scalp. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish the scalp and help strengthen hair. Jojoba works great for reducing dandruff and itchiness in the scalp but sadly, not much is known about it as a remedy for slow growth in hair.
Almond oil
This sweet oil has some sweet effects - its richness in omega-9 fatty acids, proteins, and vitamins and minerals makes it a go-to for replenishing the natural shine in your hair, and protecting it from breakage. It’s possible that it could help with hair growth, but there’s nothing concrete to base that claim around.
So, Rosemary oil wins?
It certainly does! Not only is it internet-famous, there’s scientific backing for its effectiveness for hair growth and as a remedy for dandruff and itchiness.
But… What if I want some of the benefits of the other oils mentioned here, along with that of Rosemary oil?
That’s nothing to worry about! Rosemary is a remarkable team player, and must be used along with a carrier oil to maximize its effectiveness. In fact, all the other oils mentioned here are terrific carrier oils and can be used along with rosemary to give you added benefits like stronger hair, protection from damage, and a great shine that lasts all day.
Botanic Hearth’s 100% Rosemary Oil comes infused with castor oil that nourishes and strengthens the hair. Jojoba manages dryness by regulating the scalp’s moisture levels, and added biotin is essential for leaving your hair strong and unbreakable. It may be 100% Rosemary oil, but it harnesses the power of all the other oils you could think of, making it easier for you to get the most out of your hair oil.
